"Eu não entendo."

Dr. William Wettle olhou por cima de seu ombro, irritado apertando seu rosto barbudo. "Você não entende o quê."

"Eu não entendo o proposito desse teste." Dr. Bastien LeBlanc apontou para a bateria Nikon nas mãos de Wettle. "Essa câmera já existe há muito tempo, não entendo? Isso é tão conhecido que até está arquivado. Achei que um dos nossos pesquisadores construiu a maldita coisa."

"Sim," disse Wettle. Ele a ergueu até o vidro de observação, apertou o botão do obturador e suspirou quando nada aconteceu. "Kondraki. E ele é o único que realmente entendia como isso funciona."

"Então, por que não perguntamos a ele?"

Wettle virou a câmera e se atrapalhou com seu invólucro, falhando espetacularmente em remover qualquer coisa. "Todo o resto faz sentido, mas não conseguimos perceber como é que se tira fotografias sem usar luz. O arquivo diz que se concentra em um 'indivíduo associada com [DADOS EXPURGADOS]'. O que é um [DADOS EXPURGADOS]? Uma aura? Uma alma? Odor corporal? O quê?"

Bastien piscou. "Eu disse, por que não perguntamos a ele?"

Wettle olhou e piscou de volta. "Perguntar ao Kondraki?"

"Sim, por que não?"

Wettle piscou de novo, mais devagar. "Por que não perguntar ao Kondraki?"

"É!"

"Porque Kondraki tá morto?"

Bastien arregalou os olhos. "Quando isso aconteceu?"

Wettle colocou a câmera abaixo. "Tipo… uma década atras? Você tá falando sério? Alguém atirou na cabeça dele." Ele gesticula. "É por isso que temos a câmera dele?"

Bastien franziu a testa. "Eu não sei de onde você tá tirando isso. Kondraki é o Diretor do Sítio-17. Eu o vi outro dia."

Os olhos de Wettle estreitaram-se perigosamente; O perigo era que ele não conseguisse enxergar, o que normalmente resultava em sua queda. "Kondraki está morto," ele repetiu lentamente. "Ele tentou cavalgar no lagarto e tomou um tiro por isso."

Bastien ri. "Agora você só tá inventando coisas! Ele estava lá quando eles recapturaram 682 no último Outubro, você não ouviu? Benjamin Kondraki, herói problemático da Fundação SCP."

Wettle fechou seu rosto ainda mais do que já estava fechado. "De onde essa merda de 'Benjamin' veio? Ninguém nunca ouviu seu primeiro nome."

Bastien olhou para ele com simpatia. "Desculpa, senhor, mas isso deve ser um Efeito Martinet."

A confusão de emoções conflituosas desapareceu, e Wettle ficou com apenas uma: confusão. "Que diabos é esse Efeito Martinet?"

Bastien também parecia confuso agora. "A coisa da teoria do multiverso? Onde algumas pessoas se lembram de Charles Martinet deixando o cargo no ano passado como a voz do Mario, o que nunca aconteceu, então eles pensam que são de uma linha do tempo alternativa?"

Wettle precisou de três tentativas para conseguir a próxima frase: "Isso é… isso é o Efeito Mandela?" primeira tentativa não tinha produzido nenhum som.

"O quê?" Bastien estava claramente preocupado. "A que isso deveria se referir? Você tem certeza de que não quis dizer mandala?"

Wettle olhou para a câmera e, em seguida, voltou para Bastien. Ele estava respirando muito superficialmente. "Cuida disso?", perguntou ele, com a voz erguida nas sílabas finais, enquanto passava pelo subordinado e saía correndo pela porta.

Bastien terminou de mastigar seu sanduíche de frango enquanto a Dra. Lillian Lillihammer deslizava sua bandeja ao lado da dele e se sentava. Ele aproveitou para apreciar o sabor antes de responder: "Saúde e Patologia."

Lillihammer revirou os olhos e pegou o hambúrguer de seu prato. "O que é dessa vez?"

"Checagem de Hume. Ele acha que está em uma dimensão alternativa."

Lillihammer ri alto em seu hambúrguer de carne, um pouco bagunçado, em seguida, esfregou em sua boca com um guardanapo. "Quer dizer, é setembro, isso acontece. Mas tenho certeza que o resto de nós teria notado. Por que ele acha isso?"

Bastien sorri. "Porque alguém me disse que ele não tinha ido para o físico este ano." Ele notou o Dr. Blank passando e sorriu para ele. "Obrigado pela referência de videogame, funcionou muito bem."
